Washington, United States — Marco Rubio said Wednesday that the US strike on Iran came at a “critical moment” to prevent Iran from strengthening military capabilities that could shield its nuclear program from future deterrence.
Motives behind the US strike on Iran
Rubio stated in a video message on X that the strike was launched as Iran was close to building a large arsenal of missiles and drones, which would make targeting its nuclear program more difficult. He added that Tehran had repeatedly rejected opportunities for a peaceful nuclear program, opting instead for underground facilities beyond international oversight.
Targeting Iranian military capabilities
He emphasized that the operation aimed to destroy conventional missile systems and drone programs to prevent Iran from protecting its nuclear program behind an advanced weapons “shield,” and to push it toward serious engagement with the international community.
Risks of Iran’s nuclear program
Rubio stressed that the United States will not allow a state led by hardline religious leadership to acquire nuclear weapons, describing the strike as a “last and best opportunity” to address the threat before Iran secures its nuclear infrastructure permanently.
