Berlin, Germany – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that his country aims to repatriate approximately 80% of Syrian refugees residing in Germany within the next three years. This announcement was made during a joint press conference with Ahmed al-Sharaa. This move comes amidst a growing European trend toward returning refugees to their countries of origin.
Plan to return refugees
The German Chancellor explained that the number of Syrians in Germany exceeds 900,000. He noted that the majority of them wish to return to Syria, especially given the political changes. He also emphasized that this return would be coordinated with the Syrian government and would serve the interests of both parties.
Linking the return to stability
The German Chancellor stressed that the success of the refugee return plan hinges on achieving political stability and economic growth within Syria. He asserted that providing a safe and stable environment is a prerequisite for ensuring the sustainable and safe return of refugees.
Supporting reconstruction
The German Chancellor noted that returnees could play a pivotal role in Syria’s reconstruction. This would be achieved by transferring the expertise and experience they gained during their time in Germany and other countries, thus contributing to development and reconstruction efforts.
The Syrian side welcomed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of citizens returning to participate in nation-building during the next phase, with aspirations for stability and economic recovery.
