Khartoum, Sudan – Al-Hilal of Sudan has sparked a new controversy in the CAF Champions League. This comes after they accused RS Berkane of fielding their player Hamza Moussaoui despite him being under suspension for doping. This occurred during the quarter-final matches between the two teams.
Al-Hilal had already been eliminated from the competition at the same stage after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Morocco. They then lost the second leg 1-0. Ultimately, the Moroccan team secured qualification.
Al-Hilal explained in an official statement that the player in question underwent a doping test following a previous match against Pyramids in the group stage. The result was positive for a prohibited substance listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) list.
The club indicated that the player was officially notified of the test result. He then waived his right to have the B sample tested. This constitutes an acknowledgment of the validity of the first sample, in accordance with the established anti-doping regulations.
The statement added that the player provided no medical justification or legal exception allowing him to use the banned substance. Consequently, he was suspended. However, the suspension was unexpectedly lifted just before the two matches against Al-Hilal, which the club considered a “blatant violation of the integrity of the competition”.
Al-Hilal emphasized that Al-Mousawi’s participation had a direct impact on the outcome of the first leg. He won a penalty in extra time, which his team converted to equalize. He also played in the second leg, which secured their qualification.
The Sudanese club revealed that it had submitted two official protests before the start of the two matches. These protests were delivered to the match officials in accordance with regulations. The club also expressed its dissatisfaction with allowing the player to participate despite the clear legality of his eligibility.
Al-Hilal concluded its statement by emphasizing its commitment to the principles of fair play. It also confirmed that it had submitted a formal request to participate in the relevant disciplinary proceedings. Furthermore, it clarified that it is taking all necessary steps to ensure fairness and maintain the integrity of competition in African tournaments.
