Tehran, Iran – A series of violent and continuous explosions rocked the Iranian capital, Tehran, and several areas in the west of the country on Sunday morning, April 29, amid Iranian media reports confirming heavy fighter jet activity in the skies above the region. The Khabar Online news website reported hearing loud explosions in the northeastern parts of Tehran, while other sources confirmed that the sounds of the explosions extended to wide areas in western Iran.
Details of the attack and casualties
In the first official tally of casualties, the deputy governor for political and security affairs in Gilan province announced that an attack targeted the village of Osmwandan Shaft on Sunday morning, resulting in the death of two people and injuries to five others. These developments come amidst a state of high alert across the country following a series of attacks.
Israeli army announcement
For its part, the Israeli military officially announced the completion of a new wave of precision airstrikes targeting strategic targets deep inside Iran. The military statement explained that the attacks focused primarily on mobile command centers recently established by Tehran to evade detection, weapons production facilities to undermine its military manufacturing capabilities, and air defense systems to ensure the freedom of movement for Israeli aircraft. The Israeli military indicated that the Islamic Republic’s reliance on mobile units came after the destruction of most of its fixed command centers during the past month, asserting that the recent strikes successfully destroyed many of these temporary centers and eliminated the commanders stationed there.
Continuous escalation
This attack comes on the heels of operations carried out on Saturday, in which Israeli forces targeted vital facilities for the production and storage of ballistic missiles.
Observers believe that the escalating pace of attacks indicates a fundamental shift in the rules of engagement, with direct confrontation now including the targeting of military and command infrastructure in the heart of the capital, Tehran, in an unprecedented manner.
