New York, USA – The United Nations confirmed that the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) continues to carry out its field and humanitarian tasks,
despite the serious escalation of violence and attacks on some of its positions in recent days.
Attacks on UN sites
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric explained that one of the UN sites in the eastern sector came under machine gun fire.
A mortar shell also landed near another site in the town of Beit Leef.
This resulted in minor material damage, but no injuries were reported among mission personnel.
The organization reiterated its demand that all parties refrain from targeting its facilities
and stressed the need to guarantee the safety of peacekeeping forces.
Field escalation on the border
These incidents coincided with a significant military escalation along the Blue Line.
Heavy exchanges of fire, including rockets and artillery, were observed in Israel.
The area also witnessed airstrikes and shelling targeting several towns in southern Lebanon,
including Bint Jbeil, Taybeh, Qantara, and Mansouri.
This reflects a rapidly deteriorating security situation.
Continued humanitarian support
Despite the volatile situation, UNIFIL affirmed its commitment to continuing its mission.
It noted its success, in cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces, in delivering essential humanitarian aid,
including food, medicine, and hygiene supplies, to affected civilians within its area of operations.
It also utilized periods of relative calm to ensure the delivery of these supplies.
