Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced on Friday that its air force and air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed nine explosive-laden drones. These drones were launched toward civilian targets and economic facilities in the Kingdom’s Eastern Province. This marks a new escalation in the region.
Ministry of Defense statement
The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, Major General Turki al-Maliki, explained in successive statements carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) that the joint forces were able to detect and destroy these drones with high precision before they reached their targets. Al-Maliki also noted that the interceptions took place in the skies over the Eastern Province, which houses some of the world’s largest oil facilities. He affirmed that these attacks are part of a series of ongoing hostile attempts targeting global energy security since the outbreak of the latest conflict on February 28.
Protecting energy security
The Eastern Province holds immense strategic importance as the heart of Saudi Arabia’s oil industry. It has been a frequent target of aerial attacks in recent weeks. Military sources confirmed that Saudi air defenses are on high alert to secure all vital sites. They also emphasized the Kingdom’s ability to respond decisively to any cross-border threats targeting its stability. Major General Turki al-Maliki stressed that the Ministry of Defense is taking all necessary operational measures to protect civilians and national assets, in accordance with international humanitarian law and its customary rules.
