Beirut, Lebanon – The Lebanese arena witnessed its most intense military escalation in the past 24 hours. Israeli airstrikes and heavy artillery shelling left a heavy toll of 24 dead and more than 100 wounded. This bloodshed coincided with the southern front becoming a scene of fierce clashes at point-blank range between Hezbollah fighters and Israeli forces, who are attempting to advance on several axes.
Intense airstrikes and targeting of homes
Field and military sources reported that Israeli aircraft continued their relentless attacks, launching a series of raids targeting the city of Nabatieh and the towns of Kfar Remman, Haboush, and Mansouri. In a development reflecting the extent of the direct targeting of residential buildings, an airstrike destroyed a house in the town of Hanin. Another strike targeted a building near the Qalila area, coinciding with heavy artillery shelling of villages in the western sector. This resulted in the majority of civilian casualties and widespread destruction of infrastructure.
Southern Front: “Zero Distance” Battles
On the ground, fierce clashes erupted in the Qantara area, the outskirts of Deir Siryan, and Beit Leef. The fighting also extended to the eastern neighborhood of the strategic town of Khiam. Clashes further spread to Naqoura and Alma al-Shaab, where Israeli forces attempted to establish new positions under heavy fire.
Hezbollah: Ambush tactics and improvised explosive devices
In response, Hezbollah issued a series of statements since midnight, asserting that it had thwarted Israeli advances using ambushes and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The party announced that it had targeted gatherings of soldiers and vehicles in the town square of Qantara and the Khallat al-Ain area with intense rocket fire. On the Beit Leef axis, Hezbollah reported repelling an advance at Khallat al-Jawar, confirming the detonation of IEDs targeting Israeli vehicles and soldiers on the Taybeh-Qantara road and in the town of Deir Siryan. It also confirmed casualties among the advancing force.
The settlement of Kiryat Shmona was also struck twice by rocket fire. Hezbollah further announced the destruction of a Merkava tank with a guided missile on the southwestern outskirts of the town of Bayada. The tank was reportedly set ablaze, and its crew sustained direct hits. These developments on the ground come amidst growing international fears that Lebanon could descend into a full-blown war. This occurs as both sides remain determined to continue the military escalation and refuse to withdraw from the volatile front lines.
