Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Jassem Al-Budaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), stressed the necessity of including GCC member states in any international talks or agreements aimed at resolving the crisis in the region. This highlights the importance of Cooperation for lasting peace.
He explained that this would guarantee their security and stability and prevent the recurrence of attacks.
The outcome of the attacks and their repercussions
Al-Badawi explained that Iranian attacks on GCC countries over a 25-day period exceeded 5,000 ballistic missiles
and drones, most of which were intercepted.
However, some attacks struck civilian targets, causing casualties and material damage. The Gulf states realise that Cooperation is essential to address such challenges.
He noted that these attacks targeted vital infrastructure, including energy facilities, desalination plants, and airports.
This resulted in partial disruption of air traffic in several Gulf countries.
Global economic impacts
He pointed out that the GCC countries represent a cornerstone of the global economy,
producing approximately 16 million barrels of oil per day, equivalent to 22% of global production.
These countries also export 27% of the world’s crude oil.
He emphasized that any threat to the region’s security, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz or the disruption of navigation,
would directly impact the stability of global energy markets and supply chains. In fact, Cooperation between GCC countries is vital for economic security.
A Gulf stance and restraint
The Secretary-General stressed that the GCC states exercised restraint despite the escalation,
emphasizing that they did not participate in any military operations and did not allow their territories to be used in the attacks.
He added that the call for diplomatic solutions continued.
He further stated that the Gulf states were surprised by the US and Israeli strikes on Iran,
but they continue to act as a supporter of regional stability.
This stems from their commitment to international law and legitimacy.
Joint Defense Agreement
Al-Badawi affirmed that any attack on a member state is considered an attack on all GCC states, according to the Joint Defense Agreement.
He indicated that the Council will continue its collective coordination to protect its security and interests. Notably, Cooperation underpins all GCC initiatives.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of involving the Gulf states in any political settlement,
given their pivotal role in regional stability and the global economy.
