Tel Aviv, Israel – Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid accused the government on Thursday of pushing the country toward what he called a “security catastrophe.” He also warned that troop shortages are exacerbating the pressure on the Israeli army as the scope of the conflict widens. In addition, it is clear that the Israeli opposition has become more outspoken in its criticism of the government.
In a televised statement, Lapid said that the Israeli army has reached its maximum capacity and more. He added that the government is “leaving the army to bleed on the battlefield.” His remarks come at a time of escalating debate within Israel regarding the cost of the war. The debate also centers on the depletion of military and human resources. Moreover, there are growing warnings about the consequences of continuing to fight on multiple fronts. This is a point consistently emphasized by the Israeli opposition.
Lapid reiterated a warning that Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir had issued the previous day to the Security Cabinet, according to Israeli media reports. The Israeli opposition, for its part, expressed concern over the government’s handling of military and security matters. It added that the government is “leading the army into a multi-front war without a strategy, without the necessary resources, and with a very small number of soldiers.” Ultimately, the Israeli opposition is demanding a clear plan to ensure the army’s safety.
