Moscow, Russia – The Kremlin warned of the danger of the ongoing conflict with Iran spilling over into the Caspian Sea. It deemed any escalation in the region a “very negative” development. This comes amid the widening scope of military operations in the area.
Russian concern over naval escalation
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is closely monitoring recent developments. In particular, this includes reports of attacks targeting Iranian naval sites in the Caspian Sea. These reports included missile-launching vessels. He emphasized that any escalation of military operations in this sensitive region poses a direct threat to regional stability.
Israeli attacks and expansion of operations
Russia’s warning came after reports of Israeli airstrikes targeting naval sites in northern Iran, specifically in the coastal city of Bandar Anzali. This marks the first such strike since the start of the war. It indicates a geographical expansion of the conflict.
Concerns about broader strategic repercussions
The situation is further complicated by the fact that both Russia and Iran have access to the Caspian Sea. In addition, they have a strategic partnership agreement. This raises concerns that the conflict could escalate into a wider confrontation. Such a confrontation would directly affect Moscow’s interests. Peskov also noted that the conflicting statements between Washington and Tehran regarding negotiations further complicate the prospects for de-escalation at this stage.
