London, Britain – In an attempt to calm public fears amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer asserted on Monday that there is currently no “intelligence assessment” indicating that Iran is directly targeting the United Kingdom in its current military operations.
Responding to claims of “missile range”
Starmer’s remarks came in response to pressing questions about the range of Iran’s missile arsenal to reach British territory, particularly after the failed launch of an Iranian ballistic missile toward the Diego Garcia naval base in the Indian Ocean. Starmer explained that the British government conducts regular and ongoing assessments to protect the country’s national security. He also emphasized that current intelligence does not indicate a direct threat to the UK.
These assurances come at a time when the Israeli military, via its “X” platform, has published claims that Iran now possesses ballistic missiles capable of reaching major European capitals such as London, Paris, and Berlin. It is worth noting that the distance between the nearest point in Iranian territory and the British capital, London, exceeds 4,300 kilometers. Meanwhile, the Diego Garcia base is located approximately 3,781 kilometers from the Iranian coast.
“Defending without getting involved”
While Tehran has not issued any official comment on the reports of the missile launch toward the military base, the British Prime Minister emphasized his country’s foreign policy principles in this crisis.
Starmer affirmed that Britain’s top priority is defending its national interests and protecting the lives of its citizens. However, he stressed that Britain is also very keen to de-escalate regional tensions. He further indicated that the UK’s strategic objective is to safeguard its security “without becoming embroiled in the ongoing war.”
Starmer’s remarks reflect a delicate balance London is trying to maintain; while pledging to confront any security threats, it seeks to avoid being drawn into an open regional conflict that could have dire security and economic consequences. Instead, it prefers to pursue a diplomatic approach to contain the growing Iranian threats.
