Washington, USA – Following the strikes targeting the Natanz nuclear facility, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a preliminary assessment of radiation levels at the Natanz site,
amid international concerns about potential environmental and security repercussions associated with incidents at Natanz.
A widespread environmental disaster
The agency confirmed that initial readings indicate limited changes in radiation levels within the facility’s boundaries at Natanz,
with no significant leaks into surrounding areas detected so far,
somewhat easing concerns about a widespread environmental disaster.
However, it stressed that the situation remains under close monitoring,
particularly given the possibility of internal damage to sensitive infrastructure,
which could compromise the safety of nuclear systems if not contained quickly.
Securing nuclear facilities
She explained that inspection teams are continuing their work in coordination
with relevant authorities to gather more accurate data on the nature of the damage at Natanz,
at a time when international calls are growing to ensure the security of nuclear facilities
and prevent their use as targets in military conflicts.
This development comes amid escalating tensions in the region, placing the Iranian nuclear issue once again at the heart of the international scene,
caught between concerns about radioactive contamination and calculations of deterrence and escalation-
a highly sensitive equation that cannot afford any miscalculation.
