Baghdad, Iraq – Tensions have escalated in Iraq following a drone attack on Baghdad International Airport, coinciding with airstrikes on Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) positions in Kirkuk province. The attack has raised fears of a wider security escalation in the country.
Local sources indicated that the attack on Baghdad Airport did not result in any casualties. However, it has reignited the debate about the ability of drones to threaten vital infrastructure in the capital. This comes amid heightened security measures around the airport.
Meanwhile, airstrikes targeted Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) positions in Kirkuk, destroying some military installations. Iraqi sources confirmed that the operation was in response to intelligence reports of armed movements threatening local security.
Iraqi authorities announced an urgent investigation to identify those responsible for the attacks. This came amidst calls from political forces and analysts to maintain calm and avoid any reactions that could lead to a full-blown escalation between armed factions and government forces.
Analysts warned that the continuation of such attacks could destabilize Iraq and affect the security situation in the region. They also noted that with the growing regional influence of some armed factions, the Iraqi situation is becoming a major flashpoint in the Middle East in the coming period.
