Gaza, Palestine – Eight police officers were killed in the Gaza Strip on Sunday when an Israeli airstrike targeted their vehicle in the town of Al-Zawayda in the central Gaza Strip, according to medical sources and eyewitnesses.
Targeting a police vehicle
Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital reported that eight police officers were brought to its emergency room after an Israeli airstrike targeted a police vehicle in the town of Al-Zawayda.
The Interior Ministry in Gaza stated that among the dead was Colonel Iyad Abu Yousef, the head of the Intervention Police in the Central Governorate. Seven other officers and police personnel were also killed in the attack.
Details of the attack
Eyewitnesses reported that an Israeli aircraft targeted a police jeep with at least one missile near the town’s entrance. The vehicle caught fire.
The witnesses added that several residents transported the bodies of the deceased to the hospital. They indicated that the bodies were mangled and charred due to the intensity of the explosion and the fire that erupted in the vehicle following the airstrike.
More raids in Nuseirat
In a related development, four Palestinians, including three members of the same family, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Sunday morning on the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.
The Civil Defense Authority reported that two of the dead were children. It also indicated that the bombing targeted a residential area within the camp, resulting in civilian casualties and injuries.
These airstrikes come amidst ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip. They also come amid warnings of a deteriorating humanitarian situation as the bombing continues and more casualties mount.
