Tel Aviv, Israel – The Israeli military announced on Thursday that it had carried out a precision airstrike targeting an additional key Iranian site dedicated to developing nuclear weapons capabilities.
This operation comes amid a broader military escalation in the region. It is part of what the Israeli military has dubbed “Operation Rising Lion,” aimed at undermining Tehran’s nuclear and military infrastructure.
Details of the attack on the “Talqan” site
An official statement issued by the Israeli military spokesperson confirmed that the Air Force attacked the strategic Taleqan facility, located within the Iranian nuclear complex.
The statement added that this site was used to develop vital and sensitive capabilities in the field of nuclear explosives. The military indicated that Taleqan was a key component of the clandestine “Project Amad.” Since the early 2000s, Iran has focused on developing advanced explosives at this site and has conducted complex technical experiments related to warheads. The statement further noted that Israeli intelligence had recently detected Iranian attempts to rebuild the site, which had been targeted in a previous attack in October 2014. The military asserted that the military action aimed to “eliminate an existential threat against Israel.” It emphasized that the Iranian regime has not abandoned its nuclear ambitions despite the significant blows it has suffered in recent days.
What is the importance of the “Talqan” site?
According to intelligence and human rights reports, the Taleqan facility is a cornerstone of Iran’s military nuclear program.
A report by the human rights organization Iran Briefing indicated that the site focuses on multi-stage detonation techniques, the most sensitive stage in nuclear bomb production. It is also believed that the site was used as a testing ground for warheads designed to carry nuclear payloads. For his part, former UN inspector and president of the Institute for Science and International Security, David Albright, confirmed that the targeted site includes the Taleqan 2 facility within the notorious Parchin military complex. This site has long been a source of suspicion for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) due to the clandestine activities conducted there, away from the eyes of international inspectors.
Implications of timing and escalation
This announcement coincided with the Israeli army’s release of images via the “X” platform showing the destruction of the site, a direct message to Tehran that all its facilities are under surveillance and can be targeted.
Military analysts believe that targeting knowledge centers and nuclear infrastructure in Tehran represents a radical shift in the rules of engagement, as Israel has moved from targeting proxies in the region to directly striking the “head” and projects of Iranian sovereignty. While Tehran has not issued a detailed official statement regarding the extent of the damage in Taleghan, the regional atmosphere suggests that the region has entered a phase of intense confrontation. Israel insists on completing the destruction of the Iranian nuclear program under the cover of ongoing air operations. This opens the door to Iranian retaliation that could affect vital interests throughout the region.
