Baghdad, Iraq – On Thursday, Iraq witnessed a dangerous security development that threatens to escalate the situation on the ground. Local media and security sources reported that approximately 20 members of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) were killed and dozens wounded in a series of airstrikes targeting a vital military base in the far west of the country. This attack is considered the largest and most violent since the outbreak of the current regional war.
Details of the attack on the Akashat district
According to available information, the airstrikes targeted the headquarters of the 19th Brigade of the Popular Mobilization Forces in the Akashat district of Anbar province. This area is considered strategically important along the border.
The multiple, successive strikes resulted in the destruction of large parts of the headquarters. Initial reports indicate 20 fatalities, with the number expected to rise due to the severity of some of the injuries. The wounded were transported to nearby hospitals under heavy security.
National sovereignty under test
In a swift and strong response, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command described the bombing as a “blatant violation of national sovereignty and a direct attack on Iraq’s dignity.” In a statement, the Command emphasized that the attack constituted a clear transgression against security forces committed to the highest professional standards in protecting Iraqi territory. It further stated that targeting official units under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces was an intolerable violation. For its part, the Security Media Cell issued a press release expressing its deep concern and condemnation of what it termed “the brutal and blatant attacks.” The statement read: “We are following with grave concern these attacks against the heroes of the Popular Mobilization Forces as they perform their sacred national duties. They stand shoulder to shoulder with their brothers in the security forces.”
Warnings against mixing things up
Iraqi security authorities warned that the continuation of this “systematic and repeated aggression” and the indiscriminate targeting of military objectives could directly contribute to further destabilizing the political and security situation in the country. The statement from the security cell explained that such operations threaten social peace and undermine the foundations of stability that the government has worked to establish. Furthermore, they are fueling widespread public discontent. The authorities also held the “aggressors” fully responsible for the serious repercussions that may result from this escalation.
Mystery surrounds the identity of the assailant
Despite the scale of the attack and the heavy casualties, the Iraqi government has yet to officially identify the perpetrators. Nor has it released a final, detailed statement regarding the extent of the material damage.
This uncertainty comes amidst growing speculation about the involvement of international or regional powers in the attack, especially given its timing with other attacks in the region targeting energy facilities and airports in neighboring countries. Ultimately, this attack presents the Iraqi government with a complex diplomatic and security challenge. Popular and political demands for a response and the protection of sovereignty are escalating, as Baghdad strives to avoid being drawn into a regional conflict with no end in sight.
