US Central Command (CENTCOM) posted images on its official X-link platform, claiming they depicted operations targeting Iranian warships. CENTCOM asserted that US forces are continuing their efforts to curb Iranian maritime activities that threaten freedom of navigation.
In its statement, CENTCOM said that US forces are working to counter the Iranian regime’s actions in international waters, noting that these operations are part of a broader effort to protect vital maritime routes in the region.
Iran accused of threatening international navigation
CENTCOM added that Iranian forces have for years threatened freedom of navigation in maritime areas vital to U.S., regional, and global security and prosperity, emphasizing that the United States is committed to maintaining the security of strategic waterways.
These actions are part of escalating tensions in the region, amid increasing military operations and naval confrontations in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
US warning about mines in the Strait of Hormuz
In a related development, US President Donald Trump stated that he had not received confirmed reports of Iran planting naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, but warned that any such action would be met with severe military consequences.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump added that the US demands Iran immediately remove any mines it may have planted in the strait, emphasizing that failure to do so would result in an unprecedented military response.
US media reports had indicated that intelligence agencies had detected signs of potential Iranian preparations to deploy naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz using small boats capable of carrying multiple mines, raising concerns about a potential threat to maritime traffic in one of the world’s most important waterways.
