Tehran, Iran – The Iranian political and security discourse has witnessed a sharp escalation. Security leaders have issued their strongest warnings yet to the public in response to explicit calls from abroad urging the Iranian people to overthrow the Islamic Republic’s regime. Moreover, the developments in Tehran are being closely followed internationally.
Strong security warning
Iran’s police chief, Ahmad Reza Radan, warned citizens on Tuesday against participating in any demonstrations aimed at calling for regime change. This warning followed messages from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging Iranians to rise up against their leadership in Tehran.
In remarks broadcast on state television, Radan stated firmly, “Anyone who takes to the streets at the behest of the enemy will no longer be considered a protester, but rather an enemy, and we will deal with them accordingly.”
The police chief did not stop at labeling potential protesters as enemies. He also announced that the security forces were on high alert. In addition, he emphasized that “all our forces are ready and their fingers are on the trigger.” This clearly indicates the authorities’ intention to use lethal force to suppress any potential popular movement in Tehran.
Netanyahu’s messages: “A war for freedom”
These Iranian threats come in response to a direct address by Benjamin Netanyahu to the Iranian people. In the address, he described the current military confrontation between Israel and the United States as a “historic war for freedom.” In his message, Netanyahu called on Iranians to seize what he termed a historic moment to revolt against their government.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to overthrow the Ayatollah’s regime and achieve your freedom,” Netanyahu wrote, hinting at direct external support for these actions by saying, “You asked for help, and it has come.”
American political cover
In the same vein, US President Donald Trump reinforced this trend through repeated statements. He encouraged Iranians to view the US-Israeli airstrikes and military operations as a golden opportunity to undermine Tehran’s authority and overthrow the current leadership.
Context of regional tension
This verbal clash comes at a time of heightened regional tensions. Tehran fears that external military pressure could fuel internal protests that might threaten the country’s stability. Radan’s statements reflect the regime’s concerns about a “fifth column.” This column might respond to Israeli and American calls for action amid the deteriorating economic situation. Furthermore, the impact on Tehran’s internal affairs is significant.
The international community is cautiously monitoring the Iranian public’s response to these calls. This comes against a backdrop of a tight security grip, with authorities explicitly threatening to turn the streets into a battleground against those they label “tools of the enemy.” Clearly, the outcomes in Tehran may influence regional dynamics.
