Moscow, Russia – Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned of serious consequences should Ukraine acquire nuclear weapons. She asserted that such a scenario could pose a threat not only to Russia but also to European countries supporting Kyiv.
Unexpected results
Zakharova, in remarks carried by Russian media, said that Ukraine’s acquisition of nuclear weapons would lead to unforeseen consequences. She also asserted that Kyiv might ultimately use such military capabilities against what she called its “European patrons.”
She added that Moscow considers any attempt to enable Ukraine to possess nuclear capabilities
a direct threat to international security. She warned that the proliferation of nuclear weapons
outside of established frameworks would lead to strategic chaos in Europe and the world.
Ukraine’s nuclear program
The Russian spokesperson explained that her country is closely monitoring any movements or statements related to the Ukrainian nuclear program. She noted that Moscow considers preventing the proliferation of such weapons a top security priority, especially given the escalating military tensions in the region.
These statements come at a time of heightened tension between Moscow and Western countries over the Ukrainian issue. European and American military support for Kyiv continues, which Russia considers a direct threat to its strategic interests and national security.
