Moscow, Russia – Russia announced that Brussels has officially informed Moscow of its decision to reduce the number of staff at the Russian mission to EU institutions. This move reflects the ongoing political and diplomatic tensions between the two sides.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the notification was delivered through standard diplomatic channels. It noted that the decision falls within what it described as the “increasing restrictions” imposed on Russian representation in Europe. This comes amidst heightened tensions since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis.
Moscow did not disclose the specific number of staff members affected by the decision but confirmed that it is considering an appropriate response. It deemed these measures “unfriendly” and warned that they could negatively impact official communication channels.
In contrast, European officials view the reduction of diplomatic missions as part of a package of organizational and security measures adopted by the EU as part of a review of its relations with Moscow, particularly in light of reciprocal sanctions and political tensions.
Diplomatic representation between Russia and the European Union is a sensitive issue. In recent years, it has witnessed reciprocal expulsions of diplomats and restrictions on mission activities, leading to a decline in the level of political coordination between the two sides.
Observers warn that the continuation of these steps could further complicate the European landscape and close more channels of dialogue at a time when the continent needs open diplomatic avenues. This is essential for containing the intertwined crises.
