Brussels, Belgium – The European Commission has announced the launch of a comprehensive European agenda to combat terrorism and violent extremism. This agenda includes a new legislative proposal aimed at curbing the illicit trafficking of firearms and related crimes within the EU. This is the first step in the new security strategy.
A unified European response to escalating threats
The initiative comes as part of efforts to strengthen the EU’s joint response to growing security challenges. This is particularly relevant given the evolving nature of threats across the European continent, whether from terrorist organizations or organized crime networks.
The new agenda falls under the “ProtectEU” (European Homeland Security Strategy) initiative. This initiative aims to enhance preparedness and strengthen preventative capabilities to protect citizens and businesses from increasing security risks.
Six pillars for enhancing resilience and prevention
The commission explained that the strategy is based on six key pillars. These include developing security foresight tools, strengthening institutional resilience, and improving the protection of individuals in both digital and physical environments. Additionally, cooperation with international partners is being expanded to address cross-border threats.
Increased risks of illicit weapons
The Commission warned of the escalating risks of the proliferation of illegal firearms, noting their use in terrorist attacks and activities linked to organized crime and armed violence. It emphasized that technological advancements, particularly 3D printing, facilitate the illicit manufacture of weapons. Therefore, this necessitates updating legal frameworks and strengthening security coordination among member states.
The new agenda reflects a growing European trend toward stricter control over sources of threat. It also aims to develop a more integrated legislative and security system to keep pace with the rapidly evolving nature of security risks within Europe.
