Moscow, Russia – The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced in an official statement that it had successfully thwarted a major terrorist attack targeting the assassination of a high-ranking military official in St. Petersburg.
The security operation resulted in the arrest of two Russian citizens who were found to have been involved
in planning the attack under direct orders from Ukrainian intelligence services.
Details of the disappointing plan
According to a statement from the Federal Security Service (FSB), the detainees confessed during initial questioning to receiving instructions
from Ukrainian security services to carry out a “terrorist act” aimed at destabilizing the country.
The FSB explained that the plan involved targeting a vehicle belonging to a Russian military commander by planting a high-explosive device.
This device was designed to inflict maximum damage on the targeted official and his companions.
The statement indicated that the suspects not only planned the attack
but also prepared the explosives and monitored the military official’s movements.
It further confirmed that the investigation revealed they received financial support
and technical instructions from the Ukrainian side to carry out the mission.
Escalation in qualitative operations
This announcement comes at a time when Ukraine is intensifying its attempts to strike targets deep inside Russia.
In a related development, the Federal Security Service (FSB) reported its success last Wednesday
in thwarting another terrorist attack orchestrated by Ukrainian military intelligence.
This attack targeted a military airport in the Krasnodar region of southern Ukraine.
“These successive operations underscore the vigilance of the security services in the face of what Moscow describes
as organized ‘state terrorism’ perpetrated by Kyiv to target military symbols and vital infrastructure,” the FSB stated.
The two suspects have been referred to the appropriate judicial authorities on charges of “terrorism” and “high treason.”
They face penalties that could include life imprisonment. Russian authorities are continuing their search
for any other sleeper cells that may be linked to this plot or to foreign entities.
