Cairo, Egypt – The Muslim Council of Elders affirmed that Al-Azhar, throughout its history spanning over a thousand years, has been a cornerstone in spreading the values of peace and coexistence, and in establishing a methodology of dialogue and respect for pluralism. The Council also highlighted its pivotal role in confronting extremist ideology and correcting misconceptions.
Congratulations on the 1086th anniversary of the founding
The Council congratulated His Eminence the Grand Imam, Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Council, as well as Al-Azhar scholars, students, graduates, and supporters worldwide, on the occasion of the 1086th anniversary of the founding of this venerable institution of learning. Throughout the centuries, Al-Azhar has remained a beacon of moderation and tolerance.
A global role in spreading moderation
His Excellency Counselor Mohammed Abdel Salam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, stated that Al-Azhar has maintained its universal mission, combining the authenticity of its heritage with the demands of the modern age. It has also played a prominent role in disseminating sound Islamic scholarship and enlightened human thought.
He added that Al-Azhar will remain one of the most important religious and academic institutions in the world, given its humanitarian message based on promoting a culture of moderation and tolerance. It also contributes to building bridges of dialogue between peoples and cultures, thus reinforcing the values of human fraternity.
Praise for the efforts of the Grand Imam
The Secretary-General commended the efforts of the Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb in leading the intellectual renewal movement, promoting a moderate discourse, and supporting interfaith and intercultural dialogue. He affirmed that Al-Azhar, under his leadership, continues to fulfill its historic mission of disseminating sound knowledge, preserving cultural identity, and fostering a culture of peace.
The Muslim Council of Elders reiterated its pride in Al-Azhar’s esteemed position and its leading global role, calling for the continuation of its efforts in spreading knowledge and goodness and building peace on the international stage.
