Washington, DC – The United States welcomed the killing of Nemesio Osjera, also known as “El Mencho,” the leader of Mexico’s powerful Jalisco New Generation drug cartel, during a military operation in Zapopan on Sunday.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau described the operation as “a major development for Mexico, the United States, Latin America, and the world.” He emphasized the importance of dismantling drug networks in strengthening regional and international security. Speaking on the X platform, Landau added that he was following “the scenes of violence in Mexico with deep sadness and concern.” He also affirmed the continued cooperation between Washington and Mexico City in combating drug trafficking and organized crime.
US-Mexican coordination
The Mexican embassy in Washington confirmed that the United States provided intelligence that contributed to the success of the military operation, reflecting close coordination between the two countries in combating armed groups. Government sources indicate that the operation resulted in the elimination of “El Mencho.” There were no significant casualties among the participating forces.
Local and regional repercussions
El Mencho was one of Mexico’s most dangerous drug traffickers. His cartel was responsible for a series of organized crimes and acts of violence that destabilized the country. With this development, Mexico’s anti-drug efforts are expected to receive stronger support from the United States. Security efforts to dismantle organized crime networks in Latin America will also be bolstered.
The cartel leader’s death comes at a time of increasing joint military operations between the United States and countries in the region, as part of a broader strategy to combat drugs and transnational crime.
