Caracas, Venezuela – Venezuela’s legislature has passed a comprehensive amnesty bill, a move described as “pivotal” in ending the political polarization that has gripped the country for years. The law aims to pave the way for the release of hundreds of people imprisoned and convicted for political activism or opposition protests.
The law includes dropping charges and legal proceedings against individuals who have faced imprisonment or forced exile.
This step comes as part of understandings aimed at easing internal tensions. It also aims to open channels of dialogue between the government and the opposition.
This law also follows international pressure and persistent human rights demands. It is expected to include a long list of activists and political leaders whom international organizations have designated as “prisoners of conscience.”
