New York, USA – A new report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warns of the risk of ethnic cleansing in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, amid escalating attacks and forced displacement by Israeli authorities. The report states that these attacks appear aimed at the permanent displacement of Palestinians in the occupied territories.
Widespread destruction and obstruction of aid
The report, covering the period from early November 2024 to late October 2025, explained that Israel’s intensified attacks in Gaza, including the systematic destruction of entire residential neighborhoods, coupled with the obstruction of humanitarian aid, have drastically worsened the humanitarian situation.
It noted that these practices appear aimed at bringing about a permanent demographic change in the Gaza Strip. Consequently, these practices raise serious concerns about the potential for ethnic cleansing.
Violations in the West Bank
Regarding the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the report documented what it described as the systematic and unlawful use of force by Israeli security forces. It also noted cases of arbitrary detention, torture, and the unlawful demolition of Palestinian homes.
The report concluded that these actions are carried out within a context of discrimination, repression, and consolidation of control over the Palestinian people. It further warned of their repercussions for stability and human rights in the occupied territories.
Call for accountability
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated that impunity leads to further killings and violations. He emphasized that accountability is a prerequisite for achieving a just and lasting peace in Palestine and Israel.
He stressed the need to respect international humanitarian law and human rights law, and to take immediate steps to halt violations and ensure the protection of civilians. He also warned that the continuation of the status quo could undermine the chances of reaching a sustainable settlement to the conflict.
