Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he expects a resolution with Iran within about ten days. He also warned of “serious” consequences if an agreement with Tehran is not reached.
Trump’s remarks came during a speech before the Peace Council. He reiterated his stance on the Iranian nuclear issue, emphasizing that “Iran cannot be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.”
Stick to diplomacy
The US president expressed his desire to reach a “good agreement.” He indicated that he had held what he described as “good” meetings with the Iranian side as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Earlier, the White House affirmed that diplomacy remains Trump’s preferred option in dealing with Iran. However, it also noted that there are “many reasons and arguments” that could be used to justify a military strike against Tehran.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt stated that the president has been clear that diplomacy is his first choice in dealing with Iran or any other country. She added that it would be “wise” for Tehran to reach an agreement with the US administration.
Indirect talks in Geneva
These statements come after a second round of indirect talks between the United States and Iran in Geneva. Tehran has downplayed the chances of a quick breakthrough, although Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi asserted that the path to an agreement “has begun.”
The latest round of discussions focused on Iran’s nuclear program. This comes amid ongoing US efforts to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, with the outcome of the diplomatic process awaited in the coming days.
