Gaza, Palestine – A senior UN official warned that clearing rubble in the Gaza Strip at the current pace could take approximately seven years. He explained that this is due to the massive scale of destruction caused by the recent military operations. He emphasized that the continued slowness of reconstruction efforts threatens to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. This also affects the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents who live amidst the rubble and daily dangers.
The official pointed out that the shortage of equipment, delays in the arrival of essential materials, and restrictions on freedom of movement are all factors that make restoring normalcy more difficult. He called on the international community to intensify its efforts and provide urgent support to accelerate rubble removal. He also stressed the importance of developing practical plans for rebuilding the destroyed infrastructure, ensuring safe shelter and employment opportunities for those affected.
He noted that the failure to expedite reconstruction will worsen social and economic problems. He also pointed out that it could generate new waves of internal displacement, making the crisis even more complex in the long term.
