Aden, Yemen – The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced on Tuesday that it had received a report of an exchange of gunfire between a ship and a small boat approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of the port of Aden. This incident is the latest in a series of events reflecting the ongoing tensions in the region’s vital shipping lanes.
Details of the incident
The authority explained that a small white boat, carrying five people, approached a vessel at sea and signaled to it. The situation then escalated into an exchange of gunfire using small arms. It also noted reports of two other boats in the vicinity of the incident. The authority added that the relevant authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident.
Security tensions in the Red Sea
This incident comes amid heightened security tensions in the Red Sea since 2023. That year, the Houthis in Yemen carried out a series of attacks on commercial vessels, claiming they were in solidarity with Palestinians during the war in Gaza. Although these attacks ceased following a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas last October, some shipping companies remain cautious about resuming their voyages through this vital waterway.
Impacts on trade
Previous attacks have disrupted trade through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. This has prompted several shipping companies to reroute their vessels. The region has also previously been plagued by Somali pirates who use small, fast boats to target merchant ships. This reinforces concerns about renewed security threats in the region’s territorial waters.
