Paris, France – French President Emmanuel Macron called for calm and restraint following the death of a young activist who succumbed to serious injuries sustained in a brutal attack outside a political conference in France. The incident has sparked widespread political tension.
The 23-year-old died after falling into a coma following the attack last Thursday outside a conference organized by Rima Hassan. She is a member of the European Parliament from the left-wing La France Insoumise party.
A call for accountability and a rejection of violence
Macron stated in a post on the X platform that it is essential to “prosecute the perpetrators of this disgrace, bring them to justice, and convict them.” He also affirmed that “hatred that leads to murder has no place among us.” He emphasized the importance of remaining calm and respectful amidst the tense atmosphere.
For her part, Rima Hassan demanded a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible for the attack. The Public Prosecutor’s Office responded by announcing the opening of an investigation on charges of aggravated involuntary manslaughter. However, they have not identified the perpetrators yet.
Political clashes escalate
The incident sparked a wave of accusations exchanged between various factions within the French political landscape. Bruno Retailleau is leader of the conservative Republicans party and a potential candidate in the 2027 elections. He blamed the far left. In contrast, Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party, called for the perpetrators to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Meanwhile, Jean-Luc Mélenchon leads the La France Insoumise party. He stated that some of his party’s local offices had been attacked following recent political statements. However, he did not provide further details.
These developments come at a time of increasing polarization in French politics. In particular, tensions are rising as the upcoming elections draw near.
