Tel Aviv, Israel – In a prominent analytical piece, Alex Winston, an editor at the Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post, called on his country’s government to break its silence and explicitly declare its support for the Iranian people’s protests. This coincided with what Prince Reza Pahlavi called “International Workers’ Day.”
Million-person marches expected
In his article in the Jerusalem Post, Winston predicted that this day would see hundreds of thousands,
perhaps millions, of protesters take to the streets in major cities around the world.
He noted that while the Israeli government has thus far maintained a “diplomatic approach,”
Israeli public opinion stands “unequivocally” with the Iranian protesters in their pursuit of change.
The significance of shared flags
A Jerusalem Post article highlighted the recurring sight of Israeli flags flying alongside Iranian
“Lion and Sun” flags (Iran’s historical flag) at Iranian gatherings abroad.
This was interpreted as a sign of a shared desire for change. Winston emphasized the following points:
Israel fully understands that a “free Iran” would have a profound and positive impact on the stability of the Middle East.
Furthermore, achieving change in Tehran would mean the end of a regime that Israel has considered an existential threat for decades. This would pave the way for a comprehensive regional peace.
A message of solidarity from Israelis
The editor in Jerusalem Post concluded his memoir with a direct message to Iranians both inside the country
and in the diaspora, emphasizing that geographical distances would not prevent solidarity.
While Israelis might not be able to physically participate in marches in Munich, Los Angeles, or Toronto,
the Iranian people should know that Israel and its citizens stand firmly with them on their path to freedom.
