Damascus, Syria – The US Central Command confirmed that the withdrawal of US forces from the al-Tanf military base in Syria was part of a deliberate and conditional transition plan.
This is within the framework of restructuring the US military presence in the region.
The Command explained that US forces conducted precise operations over the past two months. These operations targeted more than 100 locations using over 350 precision-guided munitions.
resulting in the capture or elimination of more than 50 ISIS terrorists.
Countering terrorist threats
Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Central Command, stated that US forces will remain ready to respond to any emerging threat from ISIS.
in support of efforts led by regional partners to prevent the resurgence of this terrorist organization.
He added that continued pressure on ISIS is crucial for protecting the United States and enhancing regional security.
For its part, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that the Syrian army had taken control of the al-Tanf military base from the American side.
It was noted that army units had begun securing the base and its surroundings. They also began deploying along the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian border in the al-Tanf desert region.
The ministry also clarified that border guard forces would assume their full responsibilities. They would deploy throughout the area in the coming days.
Countering terrorist threats
These developments come as the United States reorganizes its military presence in Syria within the international coalition against ISIS,
which was formed in 2014 after the group seized vast swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria,
before being driven from its last strongholds in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019.
The withdrawal of US forces from al-Tanf reflects Washington’s commitment to ensuring a safe transfer of the base to Syrian forces.
At the same time, they continue to counter potential terrorist threats and guarantee the stability of the sensitive border region between Syria, Iraq, and Jordan.
This move underscores the balance the United States seeks to maintain between reducing
its direct presence on the ground and continuing to support local partners in combating terrorism in the region.
