Moscow, Russia – The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced the arrest of a third suspect involved in the attempted assassination of Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev, First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, which took place in Moscow last week. The FSB stated that the detainee is Russian citizen Pavel Vasin, born in 1981, the son of Viktor Vasin, who was previously arrested in connection with the same case. The FSB indicated that the suspect played a logistical and intelligence role in planning the operation.
According to the statement, Pavel Vasin provided transportation to Ukrainian intelligence agent Lyubomir Korba – who had previously been arrested – and his father. He also helped remove weapons from hidden caches. In addition, he purchased technical surveillance equipment, including vehicle-mounted cameras and tracking devices used to monitor targets and determine their movements. The agency added that the accused also contributed to gathering information on the residential addresses and vehicles of targets using internet applications and search engines. This was done in support of espionage activities linked to the Security Service of Ukraine.
During the investigation, Pavel Vasin confessed to participating in the assassination attempt against Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev. He also admitted to monitoring two other Russian Defense Ministry employees in preparation for carrying out further acts of sabotage and terrorism. The Federal Security Service (FSB) had previously announced the arrest of the direct perpetrator of the assassination attempt, Russian citizen Lyubomir Korba, born in 1960. He was apprehended in Dubai with the assistance of Emirati authorities before being extradited to Russia. The assassination attempt against Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev occurred last Friday in Moscow. He was shot and wounded and subsequently hospitalized.
