Baghdad, Iraq – The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council confirmed that investigations into ISIS terrorists arriving from Syrian territory will continue for a period ranging from four to six months, depending on the nature of the cases and the severity of the crimes attributed to each defendant. This is to ensure the completion of all necessary legal and judicial procedures.
In an official statement, the Iraqi judiciary clarified that judicial authorities will not hand over any ISIS prisoners to their countries of origin before the investigations are fully concluded. Furthermore, the stages of evidence gathering, witness testimony, and the formalization of charges against them must be completed. The statement emphasized that Iraq’s priority is to achieve justice in accordance with applicable laws and to ensure that those involved in terrorist crimes do not escape accountability.
The statement indicated that crimes attributed to ISIS members coming from Syria are to be dealt with exclusively under Iraqi law. They are not subject to any external legislation or judicial procedures, given that these crimes have directly impacted Iraq’s security and stability. These crimes have resulted in civilian and military casualties, in addition to causing extensive damage to infrastructure in several provinces.
The Supreme Judicial Council emphasized the independence of the Iraqi judiciary in handling terrorism cases, affirming that investigations are conducted in accordance with legal procedures and under the supervision of specialized judges. It also stressed its full commitment to established judicial standards and to guaranteeing the rights of the accused without infringing upon the rights of victims and their families.
The Council added that Iraq is coordinating with relevant security agencies to secure detention facilities and ensure the integrity of investigations. Simultaneously, judicial and security efforts continue to pursue remnants of the terrorist organization and eliminate its sources of funding, as part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at consolidating security and stability. This ensures that the organization cannot resurface in any form.
