Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali Federal Government has approved the dismissal of Major General Odowa Yusuf Rage from his position as commander of the Somali National Army and appointed Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud as his successor, as officially announced by the Somali Ministry of Defense. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting on January 29, 2026, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. This followed a recommendation from the Ministry of Defense, aimed at supporting ongoing reforms within the National Army and strengthening military efforts against the al-Shabaab militant group. Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud explained that the appointment comes as part of a new phase of military operations in central and southern Somalia. These operations aim to undermine al-Shabaab’s control over territory and resources and enhance the professionalism of the armed forces.
Major General Odowa Yusuf Rageh was reappointed commander of the Somali National Army in November 2024, succeeding Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Mohiuddin, to lead the fight against al-Shabaab. However, his tenure saw an increase in attacks and security setbacks, which may have contributed to his dismissal. This frequent change in military leadership reflects the ongoing security challenges in the country. It also demonstrates the government’s efforts to strengthen the army’s effectiveness against armed groups.
