Minneapolis, USA – US Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota was attacked with an unknown substance during a public meeting in Minneapolis,
in an incident that reflects the escalating tension surrounding the issue of immigration in the United States.
Details of the incident and arrest
The attack occurred after Omar delivered her speech in which she called for the resignation
of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
While the audience was applauding her speech, a man stormed into the area near
the platform shouting and threw an unknown substance towards her.
The security team immediately intervened and managed to subdue the attacker.
He was jailed in Hennepin County on charges of third-degree assault, according to a local police report.
Ilhan Omar’s response: A message of resilience
In comments to CNN following the incident, Omar reassured her supporters
that she was “doing well,” and delivered a strong message:
“I survived war as a child, and I will certainly survive attempts at intimidation…
Minnesota is strong and will remain resilient.”
The MP also called on those present to exercise restraint and remain calm,
determined to continue the dialogue and not allow the incident to spoil the public event.
Context of political tensions
This incident comes at a time of sharp polarization in Minnesota,
where Ilhan Omar is the first Somali-American to reach Congress.
This made her the target of harsh criticism from President Donald Trump.
Trump had launched repeated verbal attacks on the Somali community in the state,
describing them in harsh terms.
He called on them to “go back to their homes,” sparking widespread
fears of increased hate speech against immigrants.
