Paris, France – President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in eastern Congo with French President Emmanuel Macron. This comes amid escalating violence and ongoing armed clashes that have exacerbated the suffering of civilians.
During the meeting, both leaders emphasized the severity of the humanitarian crisis, with the increasing number of displaced persons and shortages of food and medicine. They also stressed the need to intensify international efforts to provide urgent humanitarian aid and protect civilians, particularly women and children.
President Macron affirmed France’s full support for the unity and stability of the DRC. He called for a comprehensive political solution to end the violence and strengthen the peace process in cooperation with regional and international partners.
For his part, Tshisekedi outlined the challenges on the ground. He called for a more effective international role in pressuring armed groups and halting the violations that threaten the security and stability of the region.
Eastern Congo has been plagued by instability for years due to the activities of armed groups. This has led to one of the most complex humanitarian crises in Africa, with the United Nations warning of a humanitarian catastrophe if the situation continues unabated.
