Washington, DC – The US Department of Defense (Pentagon) has unveiled a strategic surprise in its new 2026 defense document, announcing a radical shift in its military priorities toward the Middle East. The 33-page document presents Washington’s traditional allies, primarily Israel and the Gulf states, with a new security reality. This reality compels them to rely on their own capabilities to counter regional threats, foremost among them Iran.

Highlights
  • From “direct protection” to “technical partnership”
  • Restructuring regional alliances
  • Tehran’s challenge and the new reality

From “direct protection” to “technical partnership”

The strategy clarified that the era in which the United States bore the burden of complete and direct military protection had ended. Instead, it was replaced by a new model based on:

Advanced but not ground-based support: Washington would limit itself to providing technological, intelligence, and logistical support to its allies.

Proxy warfare: US forces would not bear the burden of direct confrontation with Iran. Instead, Israel and the Gulf states would have to lead the defense of their own national security.

The Middle East as an economic hub: Redefining the region as a “center for trade and investment.” The region would no longer be a “battlefield” draining US resources.

Restructuring regional alliances

Observers believe this gradual US withdrawal from defense commitments aims to push regional states toward creating a “regional NATO.” Joint defense alliances could also be established. The document indicated the need to strengthen security cooperation between the Gulf states and Israel to fill the void that will be left by the reduced US presence. This is particularly evident in the areas of air and missile defense.

Tehran’s challenge and the new reality

This move comes at a time of escalating tensions with Iran, presenting allies with complex security challenges. While the American security umbrella has historically served as a strategic buffer, regional defense budgets and local alliances will now have to shoulder the full responsibility for deterrence. This development is driven by the Trump administration’s second-generation vision, which prioritizes “protecting America’s borders” above all other international considerations.
