Baghdad, Iraq – Iraq Supreme Judicial Council announced on Thursday the commencement of due process against members of the ISIS terrorist organization being transferred from Syrian territory.
The Council explained that these individuals will be placed in specialized Iraqi correctional facilities pending their trials under the law.
In a press release issued today, the Council emphasized the importance of documenting and archiving the terrorist crimes committed by members of the organization,
in coordination with the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation.
This step aims to establish the facts of these transnational crimes, strengthen international judicial cooperation,
and ensure that no accused individual escapes legal accountability, regardless of the passage of time.
The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council affirmed that all defendants, regardless of their nationality or rank
within the ISIS terrorist organization, are subject exclusively to the jurisdiction of the Iraq judiciary.
The statement indicated that legal procedures will be rigorously applied to ensure the protection of
victims’ rights and uphold the rule of law in the country.
This announcement follows statements by Major General Sabah al-Nu’man,
spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,
revealing that Iraq authorities had received the first batch of detainees.
This batch included 150 Iraqi and foreign terrorists who had been held in prisons under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
They were subsequently transferred and placed in Iraqi correctional facilities.
