Washington, DC – A former congress staffer has been arrested in the United States on charges of stealing approximately 240 cell phones from legislative buildings and selling them for illicit profit, law enforcement officials announced.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect exploited his previous position and easy access to administrative offices and workrooms to steal phones belonging to staff and officials over a period of several months before reselling them through unofficial channels within the United States.
The prosecution indicated that the stolen phones were valued at tens of thousands of dollars and that the incident raised security concerns within Congress, particularly regarding the protection of sensitive data and information stored on the stolen devices.
The Capitol Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to determine whether the suspect acted alone or with the assistance of others, emphasizing that stringent measures will be taken to strengthen security systems and prevent the recurrence of such incidents within one of America’s most sensitive institutions.
