Damascus, Syria — Syrian authorities announced on Friday the arrest of a senior leader of the terrorist organization ISIS. This was achieved in a joint security operation carried out by the Ministry of Interior and the Intelligence Service.
The Syrian Arab News Agency quoted an unnamed security source as saying that “a joint security operation between the Ministry of Interior and the General Intelligence Service resulted in the arrest of a senior leader in the terrorist organization ISIS.”
The source did not disclose the identity of the detained leader. It also did not provide details about the location where the operation was carried out.
On November 12, Syria joined the international coalition against ISIS. The coalition was formed under the leadership of the United States in 2014, following the emergence of the terrorist organization.
The coalition carried out military operations against ISIS in neighboring Syria and Iraq, with the participation of several countries. However, the regime of the ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad did not join it.
On December 8, 2024, Syrian rebels entered the capital, Damascus. They announced the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime (2000–2024), who had inherited power from his father, Hafez al-Assad (1971–2000).
The new Syrian administration is making intensive efforts to maintain security and extend its control. This is part of its plans to recover from the repercussions of the devastating war. It also aims to achieve reconstruction, stability, and the country’s revival.
