Ankara, Turkey – The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday its support for the military operations led by the Syrian Armed Forces in the city of Aleppo. It noted that Damascus is conducting a counter-terrorism operation on its own to ensure public security and the safety of its citizens.
Turkish support for the territorial integrity of Syria
The Turkish Defense Ministry spokesperson, speaking at a press conference in Ankara, affirmed that Turkey’s position is based on the principle of preserving Syria’s unity and territorial integrity. He stated, “Turkey supports Syria in its fight against terrorist organizations.” He added, “Syria’s security is our security, and we are closely monitoring developments.” He concluded, “Ankara is ready to provide all necessary support should the Syrian government request it.”
Background of the operation: SDF targeting civilians
Turkish sources explained that the Syrian military operation in Aleppo was a response to the SDF’s targeting of civilians and security forces, which resulted in deaths and injuries. The ministry indicated that the Syrian government’s intervention aims to restore security in areas that have witnessed security breaches.
On the ground: Tension in Aleppo and Turkish shelling in Ras al-Ayn
This announcement comes amid a tense situation on the ground. The Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods have witnessed fierce clashes since last Tuesday between the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) of the Autonomous Administration and Syrian government forces, leading to a large-scale displacement of civilians. Syrian media outlets reported that the Turkish army targeted positions and movements of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the city of Ras al-Ayn in northeastern Syria today with artillery and airstrikes, reflecting an indirect coordination in targeting the same groups.
