Washington, United States- The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced in a press statement that the United States will immediately withdraw from the United Nations Green Climate Fund. In addition, it will halt funding for 66 other international organizations. U.S. President Donald Trump signed a memorandum yesterday, Wednesday. This memorandum directs the United States to withdraw from 66 international organizations. According to a White House statement, the presidential memorandum instructs all U.S. executive departments and agencies to cease participation in and funding for 35 non–United Nations organizations. Additionally, 31 entities affiliated with the United Nations are included.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury said in its statement: “The U.S. Department of the Treasury has notified the Green Climate Fund (GCF) that the United States will withdraw from the Fund. It will also resign from its seat on the Board of the Green Climate Fund, effective as of today.”
For his part, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized the Green Climate Fund, describing it as a “radical organization.” He argued that it challenges the idea that energy contributes to economic growth and poverty reduction.
Secretary Bessent said: “Our country will no longer fund extremist organizations like the Green Fund, because its goals conflict with the reality that affordable and reliable energy is essential for economic growth. Furthermore, it is necessary for poverty reduction.”
It is worth noting that the Green Climate Fund was established in 2010 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Fund serves as an operational financial mechanism to help developing countries eliminate or at least mitigate the effects of climate change. Its headquarters are located in Incheon, South Korea. It is governed by a 24-member board supported by a secretariat.
