Beijing, China – The Chinese government has called on the United States to guarantee freedom of navigation in international waters. It asserted that any actions that threaten maritime navigation or regional security would be “unacceptable and constitute a serious escalation.” A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that China is closely monitoring US military activities in sensitive maritime areas. The spokesperson also urged Washington to “abide by international law and respect the maritime sovereignty of nations.”
This warning comes at a time of escalating tensions between China and the United States. This is occurring against a backdrop of US military exercises in the South China Sea and disputes over trade and technology. Beijing believes that the continued US military buildup in international waters complicates efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
A Chinese official stated that his country is committed to freedom of navigation for all commercial vessels. However, it will firmly counter any activity it deems a threat to its national security. He emphasized the importance of “diplomatic dialogue and peaceful solutions to maritime disputes.”
According to experts, this warning reflects China’s ongoing strategy to maintain its maritime influence, while the United States seeks to enhance its projection capabilities in sensitive regions. This makes the South China Sea a major point of tension between the two global powers.
