Dubai, UAE – The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development contributed to financing a project to supply the city of Kiffa and a number of neighboring areas in Mauritania with potable water.
It is one of the largest projects aimed at meeting the growing demand for water in the states of Assaba and Kedi Magha.
The project witnessed the laying of the foundation stone in the presence of the Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, in the town of “Twimert Iflan”, south of the city of Kiffa.
The project, whose cost exceeds 300 million US dollars, is one of the most important water supply projects in Mauritania.
Upon completion, it will provide drinking water to more than 180,000 people, with a gradual expansion to serve 500,000 beneficiaries by 2050.
It also includes the establishment of expandable production and processing facilities with a capacity of up to 50,000 cubic metres per day.
In addition to developing a transportation and distribution network extending more than 780 kilometers of pipelines to feed the cities and villages along the project’s route.
Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, said that the project to supply the city of Kiffa with potable water represents a strategic step to address one of the most pressing challenges in the region, which is water scarcity.
