Mogadishu, Somalia – A recent United Nations report warns that the Somali militant group al-Shabaab remains the greatest threat to security and stability in Somalia. Furthermore, it poses a threat to the East African region, despite ongoing military operations against it.
The report explained that the al-Qaeda-linked group still retains significant military and organizational capabilities. These capabilities enable it to carry out sophisticated attacks targeting state institutions, security forces, and civilian areas, thus hindering peace and reconstruction efforts.
The UN report indicated that Al-Shabaab relies on illicit funding sources, primarily extortion and smuggling operations. This enables the group to continue its activities despite pressure from the Somali army and international partner forces.
He added that the movement’s threat is not limited to Somalia, but extends to neighboring countries in the Horn of Africa. This constitutes a regional threat that necessitates security coordination and continued international support for the Somali government.
The report called on the international community to continue supporting Somalia in both security and development. In a related context, the report emphasized that a comprehensive approach to combating extremism requires, in addition to military solutions, addressing the underlying economic and social factors that fuel violence and instability.
