Belgrade, Serbia – Serbia announced its strong support for US President Donald Trump’s plan to reach a political settlement to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine,
stressing its openness to any serious international initiatives that would stop the fighting and put an end to the years-long war.
A pressing issue for Europe
Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric told the German magazine Der Spiegel that achieving
peace in Ukraine has become “an urgent matter for all of Europe.”
This comes amid increasing political, economic and security pressures facing
the continent as a result of the ongoing conflict.
Juric added: “Europe is under clear pressure, and it has become necessary
for it to rely more on its own strengths.”
In this context, we firmly support the plan of US President Donald Trump.
This is in addition to any other initiatives that could effectively contribute to stopping the fighting
and paving the way for a comprehensive political settlement.”
The Serbian Foreign Minister pointed out that his country enjoys a unique position
that qualifies it to play a positive role in supporting international diplomatic efforts.
He pointed out that Belgrade is one of the few capitals that can be reached by air directly
from the United States, Europe, Russia and China, in addition to Middle Eastern countries.
Trusted and neutral host
Juric explained that this geographical and political location gives Serbia
a special ability to play the role of a “reliable and neutral host”.
This applies to any talks or initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between the conflicting parties.
He stressed that his country adheres to a foreign policy based on balance and non-alignment.
Ways to end the conflict
The Serbian statements come at a time when international efforts
are intensifying to find a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
This comes amid differing positions within Europe on how to end the conflict
and the future of military and economic support for Kyiv.
The Serbian position reflects Belgrade’s desire to strengthen its diplomatic presence
on the international stage, while maintaining balanced relations with the major powers.
This comes amid growing talk about potential roles for neutral countries
in sponsoring any anticipated political settlement.
