Warsaw, Poland – Polish security services announced they had foiled a terrorist plot targeting a Christmas market, arresting a university student suspected of preparing the mass attack, according to Jacek Dobzinski, spokesman for Poland’s special services.
Dobzinski said the suspect, identified as Mateusz W., a student at the Catholic University of Lublin, was planning to carry out the attack using explosives. The spokesman indicated that the aim of the plot was “to terrorize a large number of people and support ISIS.”
Seeking to establish contact with a terrorist organization
Dobzinski explained in a post on the X platform that the suspect had also taken serious steps to join a terrorist organization, including seeking its support to carry out the attack. He noted that during the investigation, domestic security agents seized data storage devices and items related to Islam.
The statement said that the public prosecutor’s office had charged Mateusz W. with carrying out preparatory acts for a terrorist attack that could have resulted in the death or serious injury of a large number of people.
The suspect, about whom authorities did not immediately provide further details, was placed in custody for an initial period of three months.
