Safi, Morocco – Local authorities in the Atlantic coastal city of Safi announced on Monday that the death toll from flash floods that struck the city has risen to 37. This is the highest number of fatalities from such weather events in Morocco in over a decade.
This humanitarian disaster followed exceptionally heavy rainfall on Sunday evening, which caused flash floods that inundated homes and shops in the area.
Injuries and ongoing rescue operations
In their latest statement, local authorities clarified that 14 people are currently receiving medical treatment at Mohammed V Hospital in Safi, including two in the intensive care unit.
Authorities confirmed the continuation of joint efforts by public teams and civil protection services. Field surveys, search and rescue operations, and the provision of support and assistance to residents affected by the floods are ongoing.
