Rabat, Morocco – European and Moroccan authorities today announced the start of the largest engineering project in Europe. A tunnel will be built linking the continents of Europe and Africa under the Strait of Gibraltar. The estimated cost of the project is €8.5 billion, and work is expected to take approximately nine years.
The tunnel aims to facilitate road and rail transport between Spain and Morocco. This will contribute to boosting trade and tourism and strengthen economic ties between the two continents. The project is equipped with state-of-the-art civil engineering technologies to ensure the highest standards of safety and sustainability. It also includes a comprehensive upgrade of the infrastructure at the ports and surrounding logistics zones.
The supervising committee confirmed that the project will create thousands of new jobs, in addition to providing a significant boost to the local and regional economy. It will also enhance the strait’s position as a global logistics and strategic hub.
